The point is in both cases you spend 100+ hours playing the same character, and in one case you get a reward but in the other case you don't. You're thereby forcing people to play a gametype they do not like. Tell me how that is a good thing please.

PvPing with PvE character atm means handicap in most cases. Unless you always play the very same build of the same profession, PvPing with PvE char means you either dont have the correct rune/insignia combinations, dont have max vigor etc. The amount of time needed in PvE to farm 15k/FoW armors plus some weapon skins, is huge for the avg GWer, and it means that you're neccessarily much worse off in PvP. By the time you farm those stuff, with all possible rune/insignia combination armor sets, someone else will spend that time to PvP and actually be good at it. So, while you'll have the sets and skins, you wont be able to use them in a competitive manner.

This whole thing needs to be further addressed and PvP chars need to be able to unlock armor and weapon skins with balthazar faction. If someone spends 100 hours into PvP he should be rewarded as well as someone who spends 100 hours into PvE grinding. PvP characters cant PvE, they are already very restricted in what they can do. Saying that PvP chars dont need skins can be said for PvE too, saying that PvE is about style and PvP isnt, is a joke as well.

I think a lot of us play GW PvP because skill>playtime. Why? Because some of us have skill and know how to play, but we aint unemployed or no-lifers or elementary school kids with 24/7 free time.

Playtime deserves absolutely no reward. If you spent a lot of time playing, you're supposed to have more skill than someone who spent less.

In some classes there are still very small advatanges to pve chars, but I doubt players even bother with them.

If I recall, Assassin PvP characters can still only get Piercing Daggers, no Slashing Daggers.

I'd say dire pets are actually a disadvantage, because pets are such prime targets now (RaO nerf). You can still get the opposite from PvE though (forgot name)
EDIT: forgot: bears use this attack skill (again, forgot the name ftl) that triggers some paragon shouts/chants. To make up for this they have a slightly slower attack speed. In some thumper+paragon builds I think it can actually make a difference.

It is VERY expensive to keep a PvE charecter at the same level of readyness as a PvP charecter. On top of that, PvP charecters have access to ALL of your skills. Say your PvE charecter is a Warrior/Monk and you have all the skills...well if you wanted to try Warrior/Mesmer then you would have to go buy those skills for your Warrior, even though you may already have all the skills unlocked. On top of this, the addition of heros makes it even more impossible to keep your PvE charecter on the same level as PvP. This has led me to calling it quits with buying 15k armor for my Warrior and instead using my extra slots for PvP charecters. Once you finish the PvE story there really isn't anything else meaningful to do. So ultimately I use PvP charecters only, but I do use my warrior because I have lots of skills for him...it was expensive though.

Hearty pets.
Dire pets.
Different types of pets(effects damage type).
Piercing damage Axes.
Slashing damage Daggers.
Blunt damage Swords.
Piercing damage Hammers.

There are probably more, but those are the most obvious ones.

For a game like Guild Wars, playtime should not give you an advantage. However, it should not give you a disadvantage either, and I believe that is the problem right now for Roleplaying characters. Putting more effort into the game makes you statistically *worse*, unless you farm like mad which Anet does not approve of and does everything they can think of to prevent.

Killing a pet is not exactly a problem. Getting blasted by the death necro using it as fuel, however, is.

Dire pets were much stronger before RaO, when it was still used with Ferocious strike. Or the other one with +120 damage or something.

IMO: if ur pve has multiple black sets of 15k including fow and like 3 weapon sets ~ main energy/energy hiding/uberleet rare weaponskin
then use ur PvE ~ which happens to be why i use my monk...almost every time im on "tv" im most-likely wearing a different black set of armor ^^ i alternate...makes u look like u own everything ~ Pvp and pve, ppl look at u and say "wow hes good"

how ever when im not monking : i.e. my warrior is a nub still in 1.5k droks glads non-dyed...with only 2 weapon sets, a hammer and an axe 15^50 20:20 sunder +30hp ~ tho weapons are maxed i prefer to bring a PvP only...

err Summerized : bring a PvE char if u got the skills/armor/runes/weapon sets and some good looking armor ^^
~if not then...obviously a PvP char is the better choice

PVP characters are much better for PVP'ing. Even if you need something like Incetol's Focus on your monk, a req 7 sword for your warrior or slashing daggers on your assassin, you can always transfer it to your PVP character. The only thing that I can think of that a PVP character can't do it have the different pet evolutions.

Also, you can still have a PVP character look cool, it just might take some creativity. There are plenty of options, though not as many as PVE. You can't always keep your PVE character up to date with PVP gear, too.

So in general, I think PVP characters are the way to go, and you can just outfit them with PVE gear instead of the other way around.
